The Olive Valley at an Altitude of

900 Meters

Description

Hojiblanca, Lechín and Picual are the three olive varieties grown around the village of Nigüelas, which is in the Valle de Lecrín at an altitude of 900 meters, about 30 minutes from Almuñécar. Olives have been grown in the valley since the time of the Moors. The road into the village is a mighty sight with the mountain Pico del Caballo with the at wintertime snow-covered peak 'Veleta' (3394 meters) fading behind the village.

Our local guide (English speaking) meets us on the outskirts of the picturesque village where we start in an adjacent bar with a light refreshment. We are guided among olive trees while learning about olive cultivation that we might earlier not have known. Many of the trees are over a hundred years old. We take a short walk on the village's winding streets, below which you can hear rippling water being led forward in canals. It feels like a time travel!

The tour continues at La Erilla Olive Oil Museum. Here, at Spain's oldest olive oil press we learn two different ways of pressing olives. One of the methods 'Blood-press' involved the use of domestic animals such as mules and donkeys, but also slaves to pull the large millstone around.

In 1942, the village received electricity, the old machines were replaced by new ones. Tours that take place between October and January (when the olives are harvested), also get the opportunity to visit the current olive oil factory, which is adjacent to the village.

The guided tour ends with an olive oil tasting of some of the region's olive oils. In the museum's shop, you can buy local olive oils and other products based on olives.

After the guided tour, we have lunch in the village. After that we take a short walk to go down the food along the Vereda Nigüelas and the rippling underground canal. From here you can view the valley and Veleta while passing picturesque cave houses.

Full day trip that takes around 8 hours. The booked bus departs from the bus station in Nerja (Estación de Autobuses Nerja), in Almuñécar from Hotel Helios and the Aqua Tropic Water Park (Parque Acuático de agua salada en Almuñécar).
